Memorial Day 2002
The Kirk Observes Memorial day.
Five
veterans of three wars were recognized at Kirk of the Corners Christian
Church in Memorial Day Sunday. Pictured are Don Braswell, U.S. Navy
(Submarine Tender), Korean War; Don Thacker, U.S. Army Air Force, World
War II; Carol Owens, U.S. Army (Sgt. Major, Infantry), Korean War and Viet
Nam; Arthur Shirey (a visitor to church), U.S. Navy (Anti-Submarine
warfare), World War II; and Randy Young,
U.S. Army, Artillery company, World War II. Each briefly told of their
duty and the congregation applauded their service to our country.
Two young men of the church, Webelos Scouts, posted the
colors before the congregation recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Pictured
are Jason Conrey and Noah Harris.
A special quilt made by member Beverly Simpson,
commemorated those who died at the World Trade Center. The choir also gave
a choral reading entitled "Rest in Peace."
Pastor Bill Thompson told the history of Memorial Day
and led the congregation in a minute of silent tribute to fallen
servicemen and women, as well as those who died in New York, Washington
and Pennsylvania last September 11th.
