ory of a
certain business acquaintance, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>a man well-known for =
his
ruthlessness, who made a vow one day.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>&#8220;Before I die,&=
#8221; he
declared, &#8220;I mean to make a pilgrimage to the <st1:place w:st=3D"on">=
Holy
 Land</st1:place>.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p=
></span></p>

and read the Ten Commandments aloud at the top.&#8221;<span

Twain replied, &#8220;I have a better idea.<span

s no
shortage of talk about the 10 commandments, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>including where and w=
hen they
should be posted, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>actually living by th=
ese 10
commandments is much more difficult.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;=
&nbsp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>And since Mark Twain =
was so
blunt, I hope you&#8217;ll permit me to be too. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Besides, it&#8217;s L=
ent, a
time when we take the time to talk about these things.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The fact is, we&#8217=
;re all
sinners.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></=
p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>As Paul writes in the=
 Letter
to the Romans in the 3<sup>rd</sup> chapter, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>&#8220;There is no
distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God.&#8221;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p>=
</o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The word for sin in t=
he <i
style=3D'mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>Greek </i>is <span class=3DSpellE><i
style=3D'mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>hamartia</i></span> and it means to mi=
ss the
mark, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>like a person misses =
the
bulls eye when shooting an arrow at a target.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>In fact, in many cases
we&#8217;re way off the mark, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>completely outside of=
 the
boundaries of the target.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:=
p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>When we miss the mark=
, the
result is always a diminished life.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The law, which is und=
erstood
in both of our readings for today <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>as all of the teachin=
gs of
scripture, offers us a boundary.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </s=
pan><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>But say the word
&#8220;boundary&#8221; to we Americans who love our individualism, our
independence, our freedom, and our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit =
of
happiness,<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>and our hackles begin=
 to
rise.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Boundaries. . .<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Won&#8217;t that inte=
rfere
with our rights, especially the pursuit of happiness one?<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Boundaries . . . Won&#8217;t boundaries</span></=
b><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> <b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>limit =
our
freedom?</b><span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></spa=
n></p>

like it or not, very often there are consequences to having unlimited freed=

days
all we hear is bad news: <o:p></o:p></span></p>

baseline'><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>the latest stock market report, =
<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p style=3D'margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:15.0pt;vertical-al=
ign:
baseline'><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>the latest analysis from an econ=
omist,
<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p style=3D'margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:15.0pt;vertical-al=
ign:
baseline'><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>the latest index of debt or
foreclosures or joblessness. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

baseline'><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>It&#8217;s the worst economic do=
wnturn
since the Great Depression.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><=

we&#8217;ve begun to hear about the present economic crisis. <o:p></o:p></s=

baseline'><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Some analysts are insisting that=
 this
may be the result of finally hitting our limits, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

ign:
baseline'><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>limits that up to now, we have b=
een
unwilling to admit.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </sp=
an><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p style=3D'margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:15.0pt;vertical-al=

baseline'><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>American writer Wendell Berry re=
cently

resources, limitless energy, and limitless debt. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p style=3D'margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:15.0pt;vertical-al=
ign:
baseline'><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;color:#333333'>The idea of a limi=
tless
economy implies <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p style=3D'margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:15.0pt;vertical-al=
ign:
baseline'><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;color:#333333'>and requires a doc=
trine
of general human limitlessness; <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p style=3D'margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height:15.0pt;vertical-al=
ign:
baseline'><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;color:#333333'>all are entitled to
pursue without limit whatever they conceive as desirable.<span

at least 10 different sermons on this text from Exodus 20, <o:p></o:p></spa=

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>today we&#8217;re goi=
ng to
take the long view and look at the role of the law or the Torah/teachings in
the lives of God&#8217;s people.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </s=
pan><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>But there are a few t=
hings we
should note about this reading in order to understand this law we call the =
10
commandments.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:=
p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>First, this passage i=

style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>not </b>all law and no grace.<span

plit

 God who
punishes and judges, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>and then there&#8217;=
s the NT
God who loves and forgives.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><=
o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>In a single verse &#8=
211;
verse 2 &#8211; God reminds us that <b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal=
'>before
</b>the law, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>God&#8217;s grace was=
 already

your

</span>&#8220;Have no other gods beside me.<span

next six commandments are all about how we get along with others beginning =

are really more accurately translated from the Hebrew like this:<span

murder! No adultery! No stealing! No false testimony against your

then finally that last big one, &#8220;no coveting.&#8221; <o:p></o:p></spa=

notice that they&#8217;re almost all negative.<span

&#8220;Thou <span class=3DSpellE>shalt</span> not&#8221; is a part of each =

commandments sound like if they were more positive?<span

ed by 20<sup>th</sup>
century psychology <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>certainly do like to =
put
things in the positive.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>But negative commands=
 can
have some force behind them.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Picture this &#8211; =
a mother
standing on a curb, holding her small child&#8217;s hand,<span

pulls on her hand, trying to dart into the busy street. <o:p></o:p></span><=

creation

psalmist

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>as he gives praise fo=
r the
law.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The law of the Lord r=
evives
the soul; makes wise the simple; <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>gives us reason to re=
joice;
enlightens our lives.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></=

scripture guide us to the pure, enduring, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

reedom
