k legend
that tells of a woman <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>who was ready to trav=
el to
the region of the departed spirits.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&=
nbsp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>She would have as her=
 guide,
a gentle ferryman, <span class=3DSpellE>Charon</span>.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>On the journey, <span
class=3DSpellE>Charon</span> explained, she would travel along the River St=
yx, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>which formed the boun=
dary
between earth and the underworld.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </=
span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>There would be a poin=
t along
the journey <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>where she would come =
to
another river, the River Lethe.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </sp=
an><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>There, her guide said=
, she
would have the choice to drink of the waters of Lethe, <o:p></o:p></span></=
p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>and if she did, she w=
ould
forget all that she was leaving behind.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nb=

ed,
&#8220;Will I forget how I have suffered?&#8221;<span

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>&#8220;Yes,&#8221; he=
r guide
responded.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>&#8220;But you wil=
l also
forget how you have rejoiced.&#8221;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;=
&nbsp;

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Then the woman asked,
&#8220;Will I forget my failures?&#8221;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&n=
bsp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The answer was &#8220=
;And
also your victories.&#8221;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><=
o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Will I forget how I h=
ave been
hurt?&#8221;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></spa=
n></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>&#8220;Yes, and you w=
ill also
forget how you have been loved.&#8221;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbs=

an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The woman paused to t=
hink
this matter over.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p>=
</span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>And as they passed by=
 the
River Lethe, she did not drink, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>preferring to hold on=
 to the
memory even of her suffering and her hurts, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>rather than forget
life&#8217;s joys and loves.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>=
<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Sooner or later, as e=
ach of
us continue the journey of life, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>we too learn that rea=
l life
consists of ups and downs, ebbs and flows, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>seasons of celebratio=
n and
seasons sorrow.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></=
span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>These seeming opposit=
es in
life are held together<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p><=
/o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>and very often one gi=
ves
meaning to the other.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></=
o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>And this is also the =
life
that is described in the Psalms. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Walter <span class=3D=
SpellE>Brueggemann</span>,
one of our great modern OT scholars and writers <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>says this about the
Psalms:<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>&#8220;What goes on i=
n the
Psalms is peculiarly in touch with what goes on in our lives. <o:p></o:p></=
span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Deep loss and amazing=
 gift
are held together in a powerful tension.<b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:no=
rmal'>&#8221;

style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>God invites both our sorrowful lament and our th=
ankful
praise. <o:p></o:p></span></b></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>At first glance the p=
salm we
have just heard in our scripture reading <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>seems to be all about=
 praise
-- exuberant praise and thanksgiving to God.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The psalmist declares=
 that
all the ends of the earth <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>and all the families =
of the
nations shall worship God.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </s=
pan><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>But let&#8217;s not f=
orget
the context. (You&#8217;ve heard me say that before!)<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>What we heard today w=
as only
the 2<sup>nd</sup> half of this psalm.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbs=
p;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>I hope some of you ha=
ve read
the entire psalm this week, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>or can look it up in =
your
Bibles right now.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p>=
</o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The first half is som=
etimes
called a psalm of prayer and it begins with words <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>I think you will
remember:<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>&#8220;My God, my G=
od why
have you forsaken me?&#8221;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>=
<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>This cry of abandonme=
nt is
the one Jesus uttered from the cross. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>And if the rest of th=
e first
half of this psalm sounds familiar, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>it may be because thi=
s psalm
is quoted in the gospels more often than any other psalm. Besides this open=
ing
verse, 4 other verses of this psalm - v. 7, 8, 15, and 18 - <o:p></o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>are quoted in the var=
ious
passion narratives in the gospels. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Faithful Christians h=
ave to
wonder about Jesus&#8217; mournful cry from the cross.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>&#8220;My God, my God=
 why
have you forsaken me?&#8221;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>=
<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>But here is an import=
ant clue
to understanding this cry and the entire psalm that follows.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>In the Jewish tradition reciting t=
he
first verse or line of a text <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>was a way of calling =
to mind
for all hearers the entire passage.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>When the faithful Jew=
 heard
&#8220;My God my God, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>he or she also rememb=
ered the
rest of the story of God&#8217;s eternal presence, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>steadfast love, and e=
nduring
covenant, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>which called for noth=
ing less
than praise and thanksgiving.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span=
><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>This pattern of lamen=
t,
followed by praise and thanksgiving, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>is a common one in the
psalms.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>The move goes somethi=
ng
like this:<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span>=
</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>We are standing on so=
lid
ground.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Then suddenly somethi=
ng
throws us off our feet and we are spinning out of control. <o:p></o:p></spa=
n></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Sounds like real life,
doesn&#8217;t it.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p>=
</span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Finally, after having=
 held
fast to God, we are re-oriented, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>sometimes in surprisi=
ng new
directions, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>and can give thanks t=
o our
God of steadfast love.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <=
/span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The OT scholar I ment=
ioned

stories
of orientation, disorientation, and reorientation, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>including Abraham and=
 Sarah&#8217;s
story which we heard today.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><=
o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>We just heard one par=
t of
this story in chapter 17.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </sp=
an><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>What you need to know=
 is that
God had been promising Abraham <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>that he would be the =
father
of many nations for close to a quarter century, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>beginning in Chapter =
12.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>By the time God shows=
 up with
the promise again in chapter 17, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Abram is 99 years old=
.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Surely too old to be the father of
nations.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></=

llE>Sarai</span>
at 90 has long been barren.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nb=

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>To be without a son i=
n the
culture of Abraham <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>was more than disorie=
nting,
it was devastating.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:=
p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>For Sarah it was wors=
e, for
her entire value and worth <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>depended on her abili=
ty to
bear children.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>When God shows up at =
this
point in their lives, he reminds Abram of his name: <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>&#8220;I am God
almighty&#8221; - in Hebrew this name for God is El <span class=3DSpellE>Sh=
addai</span>
and it also means One of the mountain.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>This mighty One, this=
 Holy
One then gives them new names, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>an act which signifie=
s their
new purposes. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Abram meaning father,=
 becomes
Abraham, meaning the father of multitudes.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>=
&nbsp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span class=3DSpellE><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>=
Sarai</span></span><span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'> becomes Sarah, which means princess, <o:p></o:p=
></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>a suitable name for s=
omeone
who was to be the mother of Kings.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&n=
bsp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>God promises that the=
 son
they would have would re-orient their whole existence.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>They and the generati=
ons
after them would become God&#8217;s covenant people. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>It must have seemed l=
ike an
impossibility. But that is the way it is with God.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Seasons of suffering =
meet
seasons of celebration.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p>=
</o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>And Abraham and Sarah=
 had
faith through it all.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></=
o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Abraham is remembered=
 as the
father of nations, but also the father of our faith.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>In the Letter to the =
Romans
Paul recounts the faith of Abraham <o:p></o:p></span></p>

 hope,
Abraham believed that he would become <o:p></o:p></span></p>

many
nations.&#8217;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></=
o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>He did not weaken in =
faith
when he considered his own body, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>which was already as =
good as
dead (for he was about a hundred years old), <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>or when he considered=
 the
barrenness of Sarah&#8217;s womb.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </=
span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>No distrust made him =
waver
concerning the promise of God, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>but he grew strong in=
 his
faith as he gave glory to God, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>being fully convinced=

style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>How is it possible to praise God when we&#8217;re
suffering? <o:p></o:p></span></b></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>When there&#8217;s be=
en a
diagnosis of cancer.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o=

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>When we&#8217;re suff=
ering
from a hurting, broken relationship.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>When we&#8217;ve lost=
 a loved

oyed or
underemployed or are struggling with making ends meet.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Some of us are stuck =
in jobs
where we are being asked <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>to do more and more w=
ith less
and less. We&#8217;re glad we have a job. But praise God?<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Looking out the doors=
 and
into the community, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>more and more despera=
te
people are lining up at<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Norcr=
oss
Cooperative Ministry, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>but ministries across=
 the
country are experiencing dwindling resources, too.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Praise God? <o:p></o:=
p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The unemployment rate=
 in <st1:place
w:st=3D"on"><st1:country-region w:st=3D"on">Georgia</st1:country-region></s=
t1:place>
has risen to 8.6 percent, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>in <st1:place w:st=3D=
"on"><st1:State
 w:st=3D"on">California</st1:State></st1:place> it is 10.1 percent - both a=
re
some of the highest in the nation.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span>Praise God? <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>So many destitute peo=
ple
around the world are living in poverty, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>and with so little ac=
cess to
education, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>which we&#8217;ve hea=
rd about
in today&#8217;s Pennies for Peace kick-off. <br>
Who can praise God amidst all of this? <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>When we praise God in=
 the
midst of struggle and suffering, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>we are not trivializi=
ng our
lives or pretending we have no problems.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&n=
bsp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>The psalms are full o=
f deeply
personal lament, and Psalm 22 is a good example of this. <o:p></o:p></span>=

our thanks and praise, as an act of faith and a sign of hope.<span

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>It&#8217;s a hand emb=
roidered
stole, full of traditional Palestinian cross-stitch. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>What I found out was =
that
these are made by women <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>of the <span class=3D=
SpellE>Melia</span>
Art and <st1:place w:st=3D"on"><st1:PlaceName w:st=3D"on">Training</st1:Pla=
ceName> <st1:PlaceType
 w:st=3D"on">Center</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>a group that helps
impoverished Palestinian women in the West Bank and <st1:place w:st=3D"on">=
<st1:City
 w:st=3D"on">Gaza</st1:City></st1:place> strip support their families despi=
te the
political and religious turmoil of this region.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>A typical story is li=
ke that
of one 36 year old young mother of four children.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Before the September =
2000
uprising of the Palestinians, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>her husband had a ste=
ady and
good income from his small business.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>But then after the up=
rising,
his business collapsed. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>He found work as a day
laborer, but it was not steady and they couldn&#8217;t make ends meet.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>She realized she needed to do some=
thing
to help feed their four children, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>so she started workin=
g with
this center, doing traditional Palestinian embroidery. <o:p></o:p></span></=
p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>She works an average =
of 3
hours a day, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>after the children ar=
e in bed
at night and sometimes very early in the morning, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>before they wake up.<=
span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>When asked about her =
economic
situation now that she is working, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>her answer displays h=
er faith
and trust in God.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>&#8220;Thank God for =
what we
have.&#8221;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></spa=
n></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>Thanking God for what=
 we have
seems like a small thing - <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>kind of like a penny =
is a
small thing.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p></spa=
n></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>But small acts of
thanksgiving, like the little old penny, <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt'>can add up to lives l=
arge in
