Weekly Word
(Septemer 2-9, 2010)
Hello friends,Here's what's coming up this week:
THIS SUNDAY
We continue our sermon series on our new Vision and Mission, turning
our attention this week to our third mission point: "Focused on
Mission." The scriptures grounding our worship come from Micah
6:6-8, and Matthew 25:31-46. The theme of justice weaves throughout
the Bible, reinforcing again and again, God's concern for the
poor. As we commit to the practices of outreach and mission in our
church and beyond, we are challenged to see the face of Christ in
each person.
SUNDAY NIGHT LIVE: MINDING YOUR MONEY
As a way of offering community learning opportunities, PCCC is
please to begin a new fall series on a variety of topics related to
the theme "Minding Your Money." The first session will take place
on Sunday, Sept. 12, with our very own Sandy Lilly, Staff/Litigation
Attorney, who will discuss "Where There's a Will." In this
informative presentation you can learn all about wills and why you
need one, as well living wills, durable powers of attorney, and
medical powers of attorney. A fellowship supper begins at 5:30 pm,
with the program to follow at 6:15 pm. This is a free event, open
to the community so invite your friends and neighbors.
SHELVES BARE AT NORCROSS COOPERATIVE MINISTRY
The shelves are bare at NCM, but you can help! As Sonia Bratten
explained so well last Sunday, it's easy to help make a difference
through our partnership with NCM. Simply buy an extra can or box,
or maybe even a bag of groceries the next time you are out grocery
shopping, and bring these to the NCM barrel at church. Critical
needs right now are: canned meat, peanut butter and jelly (plastic
jars), spaghetti & spaghetti sauce, cereal, saltine crackers, jello,
instant pudding, baby diapers (sizes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), laundry powder,
soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, and deodorant.
DISCIPLES MEN DISTRICT RALLY
A Disciples Men's Rally for the NW District is planned for Sept. 11
at Decatur First Christian Church. Go to
www.gadisciples.org and link to "Men" under "Organizations."
This meeting will take the place of the regular monthly PCCC
Disciples Men's meeting. Contact Will Perdue or Joe Austin for more
information.
DISCIPLES WOMEN MEET SEPT. 11
The Disciples Women are back from their summer break and begin
meeting on 2nd Tuesdays on Sept. 11 at 9 a.m. "Bad Girls of the
Bible" is the study topic, led by Sandy Lilli; you'll want to be
part of this great discussion, plus help to plan the service and
fellowship for the year. For more information, contact Cathy
Miller.
NEWCOMERS COFFEE SEPT. 12
If you are a newer member or a frequent visitor, you are invited to
a Newcomers Coffee on Sunday, Sept. 12, immediately following
worship. Here’s a chance to meet with Pastor Kathy and some of our
church leaders to learn more about our church and our denomination
and how you can be part of our ministry together.
DISCIPLES WOMEN'S RETREAT
The Disciples Women's Fall Retreat will be held at Norman Park, GA
on Oct. 1-3. For more information about this excellent event to be
keynoted by Rev. Dr. Katie Hays, go to
http://www.gadisciples.org/organizations/CWF/Retreat/CWF_Retreat2010.htm.
I am planning to attend, as are Jamie and Buddy Ray. Yes, I know it
is our Pumpkin Weekend, and I plan to be back for that. But I
encourage women of the church to attend this event. You will be
glad you did!
CONGREGATIONAL BYLAWS MEETING
The September 19 congregational meeting to vote on the new
bylaws is coming up. It will take place right after worship, and
the Fellowship Team has promised to provide some extra goodies to
snack on for this important work. If you are a member of the
congregation, please plan on being there. Also, don't forget to
email your questions to any member of the Bylaws Task Force: Pam
Callon, Rod Dahl, or Dave McDowell.
ARE WE MAKING DISCIPLES?
Not according to a recently completed "National Study of Youth
and Religion," a study of congregations in seven denominations. The
investigators, Christian Smith and Melinda Denton, have identified
some common themes in the Christian faith of contemporary American
teens, and it is nothing more than a bland, "nice and easy" faith
that they call "MTD" or Moralistic Therapeutic Deism. In other
words, there is a God, but all this God wants is for us to feel good
and be nice. We don't have to read very far in any gospel (try Luke
4:18) to know that this is not the gospel taught by Jesus Christ.
